Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and configure a custom field in Jira.

Quick summary

Adding a custom field in Jira lets teams capture project-specific data on issues beyond the default fields. This step-by-step walkthrough shows how to create a custom field and assign it to the right screens directly from Jira's admin settings.

Steps

  1. Click the gear icon in the top-right corner to open Jira settings.
  2. Select Issues from the settings menu.
  3. On the left-hand side, under the Fields section, click on Custom fields.
  4. Click the Create custom field button in the top-right of the custom fields section.
  5. Select a field type from the available options, then click Next.
  6. Enter a name and description for the custom field, then click Create.
  7. Select the appropriate screens where the field should appear and click Update.
  8. The custom field is now created and available for use in the selected projects and screens.

📌 Why this matters

Custom fields in Jira allow teams to track data that matters most to their specific workflows, going beyond Jira's default issue fields. Whether you need to capture priority scores, customer segments, or release tags, custom fields make Jira fully adaptable to your team's process. Properly configured custom fields appear on the right screens and projects, ensuring data is consistently captured across every issue. This capability is essential for teams that rely on Jira for structured, data-driven project management.
