Use this interactive demo to learn how to use Airtable as a robust database for your projects.

‍

‍

Basically, Airtable itself functions as a database. Here’s a short tutorial on how to set it up accordingly:

‍

  1. On Airtable's main dashboard, go to the left-side panel and click 'Create'.
  2. Choose 'Build an App on Your Own' from the available options.
  3. After that, a new base will be created and added to your Airtable account. You can now customize it as your database. Click the Base menu to get started.
  4. Come up with a unique base name, then enter it into the provided input field.
  5. Subsequently, set your preferred base color and icon under the Appearance section.
  6. Now, it's time to encode the data. First, configure the default fields. Simply click the drop-down arrow next to them to edit the field properties based on your preference.
  7. If you need more, click the 'Add Field' button.
  8. Once the fields are ready, encode the data individually into their respective fields.
  9. On the one hand, you may click 'Add or Import' if you have data ready for import.
  10. You can automatically create and update records in your Airtable database. To do that, simply go to the 'Automations' tab and use the available options to implement your desired workflow.
  11. Finally, you can now share your Airtable database with your team members. Simply tap the 'Share' button in the top-right corner to proceed.

📌 Why this matters

You can organize complex information without learning SQL or managing server infrastructure, making database functionality accessible for project management, inventory tracking, or client records.

The real advantage lies in Airtable's hybrid nature—it combines spreadsheet familiarity with relational database power, meaning you can link records across tables, create dynamic views, and automate workflows. This bridges the gap between simple spreadsheets that become unwieldy and complex databases that require technical expertise, giving you structured data management that scales with your needs.
