Use this interactive demo to learn how to resize and stretch an image in Canva without losing quality.

Quick summary

Canva lets you stretch an image using manual resize handles or the Smart Crop tool, giving you two flexible methods to adjust image dimensions directly in your design. This step-by-step guide shows you exactly how to use both approaches inside the Canva editor.

Steps

  1. Click on the image to select it in your Canva design.
  2. Use the corner circles to resize the image proportionally.
  3. Use the side rectangles to stretch the image horizontally or vertically.
  4. Click Edit photo in the toolbar above your Canva design.
  5. Choose Crop from the Edit photo panel.
  6. Click Done to apply the crop and proceed.
  7. Click the Smart Crop button to stretch the image intelligently.
  8. Review your stretched image produced by Smart Crop.
  9. Once satisfied, click Share to save your finished image.

📌 Why this matters

Stretching an image in Canva is a common design task, whether you need to fill a banner, resize a photo for social media, or fit an image to a specific canvas size. Canva offers two distinct methods — manual resize handles for precise control and the Smart Crop tool for AI-assisted stretching — making it accessible for both beginners and experienced designers. Understanding how to use both the corner and side resize handles alongside the Edit photo and Smart Crop features helps you avoid distortion and maintain visual quality across all your projects.
