Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up conversion goals using custom events in Google Analytics.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows how to set up goals in Google Analytics by creating a custom event and marking it as a conversion. You can track key user actions — like visiting a Thank You page — by defining matching conditions and linking them to a data stream.

Steps

  1. Click on Admin in the left pane of Google Analytics.
  2. Find the Events section in the Admin panel.
  3. Click on Create event to start building a new custom event.
  4. Choose the relevant Data Stream to associate with your event.
  5. Hit Create to proceed with the event setup.
  6. Enter a custom event name and provide the required matching conditions.
  7. Set the Value field to the URL of the page you want to mark as a conversion (e.g. the Thank You page).
  8. Ensure the Copy parameters checkbox is checked.
  9. Hit Create to save your custom event.
  10. Note: the custom event will not appear as an existing event until it is triggered at least once.
  11. Once the event is triggered, mark it as a conversion in the Events list.

📌 Why this matters

Setting up goals in Google Analytics is essential for measuring the actions that matter most to your business, such as form submissions, purchases, or page visits. In GA4, goals are configured as custom events with conversion tracking, replacing the legacy Goals interface. Understanding how to create and mark custom events as conversions enables marketers and analysts to accurately attribute success to the right channels and campaigns. Without properly configured conversion events, teams lose visibility into which traffic sources and user behaviors are actually driving business results.
