Use this interactive demo to learn how to record time spent on a Jira issue in seconds.

Quick summary

Logging time in Jira lets teams accurately track hours spent on each issue using the built-in Time Tracking field. Enter time in weeks, days, hours, or minutes format and save it directly from the issue panel on your Jira board.

Steps

  1. Click on the Issue card on your Jira board to open it.
  2. Scroll down inside the issue panel to find the Time Tracking column.
  3. Enter the time spent in W D H M format (weeks, days, hours, minutes).
  4. Hit Save to record your logged time.
  5. Confirm the success prompt that appears once the time has been saved.

📌 Why this matters

Accurate time tracking in Jira is essential for engineering and project teams that need to measure effort, forecast capacity, and bill clients correctly. Jira's built-in Time Tracking field lets team members log hours directly on individual issues without switching tools, keeping all work data centralized. This reduces manual reporting overhead and gives project managers real-time visibility into how time is being spent across sprints and epics. Teams that consistently log time in Jira can make better data-driven decisions about resource allocation and project delivery timelines.
