How To Import Data Into Salesforce

Updated on:
May 8, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to bulk import contacts into Salesforce from a CSV file.

Quick summary

Importing contacts into Salesforce using the built-in Data Import Wizard lets you bulk-add new records from a CSV file without any third-party tools. This step-by-step process covers selecting the right object type, mapping CSV headers to Salesforce fields, and triggering the import in minutes.

Steps

  1. Navigate to Contacts on your Salesforce dashboard.
  2. Click the Import button in the upper right corner of the Contacts list page.
  3. Select Accounts and Contacts under the Standard Objects tab.
  4. Choose Add new records as your import type.
  5. Select CSV as your data source.
  6. Upload your CSV file containing all your sales contacts.
  7. Click the Next button to proceed to the field mapping step.
  8. Map your CSV headers to the corresponding Salesforce objects in the next step.
  9. Review available Salesforce fields such as Contact: Email, Contact: First Name, and Contact: Last Name.
  10. Click the Map button to complete the field mapping process.
  11. Hit Next to advance to the final confirmation screen.
  12. Click Start Import to begin importing your contacts.
  13. Click OK to confirm and allow the import to run.
  14. Select All Contacts from the dropdown to verify your newly imported contacts are visible.

📌 Why this matters

Importing contacts into Salesforce efficiently is critical for sales and operations teams that need to migrate or onboard large contact lists without manual data entry. Salesforce's built-in Data Import Wizard supports bulk CSV uploads directly into standard objects like Accounts and Contacts, eliminating the need for expensive third-party migration tools. Proper field mapping during the import process ensures data integrity, so key fields like email, first name, and last name are accurately captured in your CRM. Mastering this workflow helps teams get their contact database up and running faster, accelerating pipeline activity from day one.
