Use this interactive demo to learn how to track bounce rate using Google Analytics 4 reports.

Quick summary

Google Analytics 4 does not display bounce rate by default, but you can add it as a custom metric to the Pages and Screens report. This step-by-step walkthrough shows how to surface bounce rate data alongside engagement metrics for any landing page.

Steps

  1. Go to Reports in the left pane of Google Analytics.
  2. Navigate to Engagement then select Pages and Screens.
  3. Click the Edit button to customize the report.
  4. Click on Metrics to open the metrics panel.
  5. Hit Add Metric to add a new metric to the report.
  6. Find and select Bounce Rate from the available metrics list.
  7. Add the additional Engagement metrics shown in the panel.
  8. Hit Apply to save your metric changes to the report.
  9. View the Bounce Rate column now visible across your pages.
  10. Note that Engagement Rate can also serve as an alternative indicator of bounce behavior.

📌 Why this matters

Bounce rate is a critical signal for understanding whether your landing pages are engaging visitors or driving them away, yet Google Analytics 4 hides it behind a custom setup. Knowing how to add bounce rate to the Pages and Screens report gives marketers and analysts direct visibility into page-level engagement without relying on third-party tools. This workflow also introduces Engagement Rate as a complementary GA4-native metric, giving teams a fuller picture of user behavior. Mastering this report customization helps teams make faster, data-driven decisions to improve content performance and reduce site abandonment.
