Use this interactive demo to learn how to export your Jira backlog as an Excel CSV file.

Quick summary

You can download your Jira backlog to Excel by filtering issues by Backlog status and using the Export Excel CSV option. This built-in Jira export feature lets teams share and analyze sprint data outside of Jira without any third-party tools.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the Backlog view of your Jira project.
  2. Click the ellipsis icon in the top-right corner of the board.
  3. Select Configure board from the dropdown menu.
  4. Select Edit filter query to modify the board's issue filter.
  5. Search for backlog in the search bar to locate the relevant filter field.
  6. Select the Status column from the available filter options.
  7. Choose Backlog as the status value to filter only backlog issues.
  8. Click Export issues to open the export options.
  9. Select Export Excel CSV (my defaults) and Jira will generate and download a CSV file to your device.

📌 Why this matters

Exporting a Jira backlog to Excel gives project managers and teams the flexibility to analyze, share, and report on issue data outside of Jira using familiar spreadsheet tools. Many stakeholders who do not have Jira access still need visibility into backlog status, making CSV exports a critical workflow. The built-in Jira export feature requires no plugins or integrations, making it a fast and reliable way to produce an Excel-compatible report of all backlog issues filtered by status. Understanding this workflow helps teams improve sprint planning transparency and reduces manual data entry when reporting to leadership or clients.
