Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up and assign epics on a Jira board.

Quick summary

Creating an epic in Jira lets teams group related issues under a single high-level goal for better sprint planning and backlog organization. This guide walks through enabling the Epic Panel, naming a new epic, and assigning issues to it directly from the board.

Steps

  1. Go to Board in the left sidebar.
  2. Click on View Settings on the right side of the board.
  3. Enable the Epic Panel from the dropdown menu.
  4. Click on +Create Epic in the Epic panel.
  5. Provide a relevant epic name and hit Enter/Return on your keyboard.
  6. Click the small arrow to expand the Epic tile and reveal its contents.
  7. Click and hold the issue you want to add to the epic.
  8. Drag and drop the issue onto the Epic tile to assign it.
  9. Confirm the epic name now appears on the relevant issue card.
  10. Alternatively, use the three-dot menu > Parent > [Epic Name] to assign an issue to the epic.

📌 Why this matters

Epics in Jira are essential for organizing large bodies of work into manageable, trackable units across sprints and releases. Teams that use epics can align individual issues to broader project goals, making backlog grooming, sprint planning, and progress reporting significantly more efficient. Understanding how to create and assign epics directly from the Jira board reduces context-switching and keeps project managers in full control of scope without leaving their workflow. This is a foundational Jira skill for any agile team looking to improve delivery visibility and cross-team coordination.
