Use this interactive demo to learn how to build and save a reusable project template in Asana.

Quick summary

Creating a project template in Asana lets teams standardize workflows by saving a fully configured project — complete with tasks, sections, and assignees — so it can be reused across future projects without starting from scratch.

Steps

  1. Click the '+' button in the Asana sidebar to create a new project.
  2. Select 'Project' from the options that appear.
  3. Choose how you would like your project to start (e.g. blank, from a template, or from a list).
  4. Name your project to identify it clearly.
  5. Click 'Create project' to generate the new project.
  6. Populate tasks with relevant details such as descriptions, due dates, and assignees to ensure the template provides comprehensive guidance.
  7. Create sections within the project to categorize tasks by phase or category if your projects have distinct stages.
  8. Open the drop-down menu and select 'Save as template'.
  9. Click 'Create template' to convert the project into a reusable template.
  10. Click 'Done' to finalize and save the template.
  11. Access your saved template anytime under the 'Template' section of your workspace.

📌 Why this matters

Asana project templates eliminate repetitive setup work by letting teams capture a proven project structure — including tasks, sections, due dates, and assignees — and reuse it instantly for any future project. This is especially valuable for teams that run recurring workflows such as product launches, client onboarding, or sprint planning, where consistency and speed are critical. By standardizing how projects are structured, teams reduce errors, onboard new members faster, and ensure every project follows best practices from day one.
