How to Cancel Jira Ticket

Updated on:
May 11, 2026

Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to mark a Jira ticket as cancelled using a custom workflow status.

Quick summary

To cancel a Jira ticket, you must first add a Cancelled status to your project's workflow via the workflow editor, then apply that status directly to the ticket. This process requires editing the workflow, adding the new status, saving changes, and updating the ticket's status field to Cancelled.

Steps

  1. Select the ticket you want to cancel from your Jira board or issue list.
  2. Open the status menu on the ticket and click on it.
  3. Click 'View workflow' to open the workflow diagram for the ticket's project.
  4. Click 'Edit workflow' to enter workflow editing mode.
  5. Select 'To-do status' located above the edit workflow area.
  6. Create a new status and click on it to begin configuring it.
  7. Click 'Add' to add the new status to the workflow.
  8. Select 'Update workflow' to apply your changes to the workflow.
  9. Click 'Save changes' to confirm the workflow update.
  10. Configure the columns and statuses of your Jira tickets and click 'Save changes' again to finalize.
  11. Click on the current status of the ticket and select 'Cancelled' from the status options.
  12. Confirm the status change — the ticket should now be marked as 'Cancelled'.

📌 Why this matters

Cancelling a Jira ticket properly — rather than leaving it open or deleting it — keeps your project backlog clean and your team's reporting accurate. Jira does not include a native 'Cancelled' status by default, so knowing how to add a custom workflow status is essential for teams that need to track abandoned or deprioritized work. This process gives project managers full visibility into which tickets were intentionally stopped, supporting better sprint planning and audit trails. Mastering Jira workflow customization helps teams maintain a well-organized issue tracker and avoid misleading metrics caused by unresolved open tickets.
