How to Add Subtask in Asana

Updated on:
May 11, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to break tasks into subtasks inside Asana.

Quick summary

Adding a subtask in Asana lets you break a parent task into smaller, assignable units — each with its own due date and assignee. This keeps complex work organized and accountable within a single task detail view.

Steps

  1. Navigate to the project and find the task to which you want to add a subtask.
  2. Click on the task to open its detailed view.
  3. In the task detail view, locate the Add subtask option, typically found in the middle of the task pane.
  4. Click the +Add subtask button or press Tab + S on your keyboard, then enter the name of the subtask.
  5. Set due dates for the subtask just as you would for a regular task.
  6. Assign the subtask to a team member by clicking the assignee field within the subtask.
  7. Your subtasks are now created — you can efficiently add and manage subtasks in Asana going forward.

📌 Why this matters

Subtasks in Asana allow teams to break complex tasks into smaller, trackable action items — each with its own assignee, due date, and status. This level of task hierarchy is critical for project managers who need clear accountability and granular progress visibility without creating separate top-level tasks. By keeping subtasks nested under a parent task, teams maintain context and reduce noise in project boards. Mastering Asana subtask management directly improves team coordination, deadline tracking, and overall project delivery efficiency.
