Use this interactive demo to learn how to trim and cut video clips in Descript's timeline editor.

Quick summary

Descript lets you trim video directly in the timeline editor by splitting and deleting clips without any advanced editing skills. You can cut unwanted sections in seconds using the right-click context menu and keyboard shortcuts like Delete or Backspace.

Steps

  1. In the timeline, click on the video clip you want to trim.
  2. Drag the playhead (the vertical line) to the beginning or end of the section you want to cut.
  3. Right-click on the video clip and select Split clip to divide the video into two clips.
  4. Use the Cut option from the right-click menu to cut the selected section of the video.
  5. Move the playhead to the point where you want the cut to end, then split the video again.
  6. Select the unwanted section and press Delete or Backspace to remove it from the timeline.

📌 Why this matters

Trimming video in Descript is faster than in traditional video editors because it treats your footage like a document — you split, cut, and delete clips directly from the timeline without rendering delays. This makes Descript ideal for podcasters, content creators, and marketers who need to remove mistakes, filler footage, or dead air quickly. The ability to use simple keyboard shortcuts like Delete and Backspace to remove unwanted sections dramatically reduces post-production time. Descript's timeline-based video trimming workflow is purpose-built for teams who prioritize speed and simplicity over complex non-linear editing tools.
