How to Remove Password from MS Access Database

Updated on:
May 12, 2026

Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to decrypt and remove a password from your MS Access database.

Quick summary

To remove a password from a Microsoft Access database, you must open the file in Exclusive mode, then use the Decrypt Database option under File > Info. This process permanently strips password protection from the Access database file without deleting any data.

Steps

  1. Open Microsoft Access and click 'Open'.
  2. Click 'Browse' to navigate to the location of your Access database.
  3. Select the database, click the arrow next to the 'Open' button, and choose 'Open Exclusive'.
  4. Enter the current password when prompted and click 'OK'.
  5. Once the database is open, go to the 'File' tab.
  6. Select 'Info' from the File menu.
  7. Click 'Decrypt Database'.
  8. Enter the current password when prompted, then click 'OK' to remove the password protection.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing how to remove a password from a Microsoft Access database is essential for database administrators and users who need to regain unrestricted access to their data. Password-protected Access databases can block legitimate users from opening or sharing files when credentials are lost or roles change. The Decrypt Database feature in Microsoft Access provides a safe, built-in method to strip password protection without corrupting or losing any stored data. This step-by-step process helps teams maintain smooth database access management and avoid costly downtime caused by locked Access files.
