Quick summary

Descript lets you fade audio in and out directly on the timeline by dragging a fade handle on any audio clip — no plugins or menus required. This step-by-step walkthrough shows exactly how to open a project, select a clip, and use the fade handle to control both fade-in and fade-out duration before publishing.

Steps

  1. Open the Descript project that contains the audio you want to edit.
  2. Click on the audio clip you want to apply the fade effect to.
  3. Hover your cursor over the left edge of the audio clip to reveal the fade handle at the beginning of the clip.
  4. Click and drag the fade handle to the right to increase the fade-in duration.
  5. Click and drag the fade handle on the right edge to the left to adjust the fade-out duration.
  6. Once satisfied, save your work by clicking "Publish" to finalize the project.

📌 Why this matters

Descript's built-in audio fade feature lets podcasters, video editors, and content creators apply professional fade-in and fade-out effects without leaving their editing workflow. By simply dragging a fade handle directly on the timeline, users can create smooth audio transitions that improve production quality in seconds. This eliminates the need for external audio software, making polished sound design accessible to creators of every skill level. For teams producing podcasts, video content, or course material, Descript's intuitive fade controls save time and deliver broadcast-ready results.
