How To Delete CMS Collection Webflow

Updated on:
May 8, 2026

Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to permanently remove a CMS Collection from your Webflow project.

Quick summary

Deleting a CMS Collection in Webflow requires removing all connections, instances, and references before the Delete Collection button becomes active. This step-by-step walkthrough shows you exactly how to unlink dependencies and permanently remove a collection from your Webflow project.

Steps

  1. Open the CMS section in the Webflow Designer.
  2. Hover over the collection you wish to delete and click the small gear icon that appears to open its settings.
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the settings page to find the Delete Collection button — if it is active, click it and confirm to delete immediately.
  4. If the button is inactive, click View Connections to see all linked connections.
  5. Review the list of connections in the modal and unlink them directly from that view.
  6. If the Delete Collection button is still inactive after removing connections, click the Collection name instead of the gear icon to check Fields and Instances.
  7. Clicking the Collection name opens a list of all instances of that collection.
  8. Click the Select option in the instances list.
  9. Tick the checkbox next to Name to select all instances at once.
  10. Click Delete to remove all selected instances.
  11. Confirm the deletion to proceed.
  12. With no instances or connections remaining, attempt to delete the collection now, or continue to check for active references.
  13. Click the Delete Collection button from the settings page.
  14. If a References pop-up appears, review the list of existing references blocking deletion.
  15. Press OK and navigate to the referenced collection to resolve the reference.
  16. Open the referenced collection — in this example, the Authors tab.
  17. Scroll down to custom fields, locate the Blogs field that references Blog Posts, and click the gear icon to view options.
  18. Click the garbage bin icon to delete the reference field, or change the Collection value to a different collection.
  19. Confirm your choice to remove the reference.
  20. Return to the original collection, scroll down, and click the Delete Collection button.
  21. Click Delete in the confirmation pop-up to finalize.
  22. Your CMS Collection has been successfully deleted from Webflow.

📌 Why this matters

Knowing how to properly delete a CMS Collection in Webflow is essential for keeping your project clean and free of outdated or redundant data structures. Because Webflow prevents deletion when active connections, instances, or references exist, users often get stuck with a grayed-out Delete Collection button and no clear path forward. This demo covers every scenario — from simple one-click deletion to resolving cross-collection references and unlinking bound instances — giving Webflow users a complete, reliable process for removing any CMS Collection without breaking their site.
