How To Create A Cohort In Mixpanel

Updated on:
May 11, 2026
By:
Madhav Bhandari
Use this interactive demo to learn how to build and define user cohorts in Mixpanel.

Quick summary

A Mixpanel cohort is a saved group of users defined by shared behaviors or properties, enabling targeted user segmentation for deeper product analytics. This guide shows how to create a cohort in Mixpanel by navigating to Data Management, applying filters, and saving the cohort for ongoing analysis.

Steps

  1. From the top navigation menu, go to Data Management on the right.
  2. Select Cohorts from the Data Management menu.
  3. On the top right of the Cohorts page, click + Create Cohort.
  4. In the create cohort menu that opens, enter a name for your cohort.
  5. Click to add a filter to distinguish and define this cohort from the rest of your users.
  6. Review the available data types and properties you can select to refine your cohort.
  7. Once you select a data type, add any additional conditions and checks to further narrow the cohort.
  8. When your cohort is fully defined, click Create Cohort to save it.
  9. Your new cohort now appears in the Cohorts tab, which displays a count of users that fall under it.
  10. The saved cohort is now available under the Cohorts tab and can be used for analysis across Mixpanel reports.

📌 Why this matters

Creating cohorts in Mixpanel allows product and growth teams to segment users by specific behaviors, events, or properties, making it possible to analyze how distinct user groups interact with a product over time. Cohort-based analysis helps identify retention patterns, conversion drop-offs, and feature adoption trends that aggregate metrics would otherwise hide. By saving reusable cohorts, teams can apply consistent user segments across funnels, retention charts, and A/B test results without repeating filter setup. This makes Mixpanel cohorts a foundational tool for data-driven product decisions and personalized user engagement strategies.
