Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and apply tags in a Notion database.

Quick summary

Notion tags are created using a Multi-select property inside any Notion database, letting you label, filter, and sort entries by category. Once set up, you can assign one or more tags — such as Work, Personal, or Important — to every item in your database.

Steps

  1. Open the Notion database where you want to use tags.
  2. Click Add property to create a new database property.
  3. Select Multi-select as the property type.
  4. Rename the property to Tags.
  5. Click a cell under the Tags column, type your first tag such as Work, Personal, or Important, then press Enter to add it.
  6. Select one or more tags for each database item.
  7. Continue adding data and tags to organize, filter, or sort your database.

📌 Why this matters

Notion tags powered by the Multi-select property give teams and individuals a fast, flexible way to categorize database entries without creating complex folder structures. By assigning tags like Work, Personal, or Important, users can instantly filter and sort hundreds of records to surface exactly what they need. This feature is critical for project management, content calendars, and knowledge bases where quick retrieval directly impacts productivity. Mastering Notion tags is one of the highest-leverage skills for anyone building organized, scalable workspaces in Notion.
