Use this interactive demo to learn how to add block and inline equations to your Notion pages.

Quick summary

Notion's equation feature lets you insert LaTeX-formatted math as either a standalone block equation or an inline equation within a sentence. You can add, save, and edit equations directly on any Notion page without any third-party tools.

Steps

  1. Open your Notion page and type /equation, then select Block Equation from the menu.
  2. Type your equation in the equation box — for example, enter x^2 + y^2 = z^2.
  3. Click outside the equation box to save it as a separate equation block.
  4. To add an inline equation, type your text first to position your cursor inside a sentence.
  5. Place your cursor where you want the equation, type /inline equation, and select Inline Equation from the menu.
  6. Enter your equation — such as E = mc^2 — then press Enter.
  7. Finish your sentence and the equation will appear inline with the rest of your text.
  8. To edit an equation, click it and update the formula in the editor.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's built-in equation support allows students, researchers, and knowledge workers to render formatted mathematical formulas directly inside their notes and documents without switching tools. By supporting both block and inline LaTeX equations, Notion eliminates the need for separate math editors, keeping technical content alongside project notes, wikis, and databases. This makes Notion a compelling all-in-one workspace for STEM teams and educators who need to document complex formulas alongside written content. The ability to instantly edit and update equations in-context accelerates documentation workflows and reduces friction for technical users.
