Quick summary
ChatGPT Custom Instructions let you define your role, preferences, and response format once so they apply automatically to every new chat. Instead of repeating context each session, you configure it in Settings under Personalization and ChatGPT adapts accordingly.
Steps
- Click your profile icon in the bottom-left corner to access settings.
- Select Settings to open your account menu.
- Select the Personalization tab inside Settings.
- Go to Custom Instructions and type what ChatGPT should know about you — your role, preferences, or context — in the empty field.
- Describe how you'd like ChatGPT to respond, including preferred tone, format, or detail level.
- Hit Save and your instructions will apply to every new conversation.
- Your Custom Instructions are now active, saving you from repeatedly typing your context or formatting rules.
