How to Unhighlight a Comment on YouTube

Use this interactive demo to learn how to remove comment highlighting on a YouTube video.

Quick summary

When you open a YouTube video via a notification link, the referenced comment appears highlighted on the page. You can remove that highlight by changing the Sort by filter or by stripping the &lc= parameter from the video URL.

Steps

  1. Open YouTube and click a notification that links you to a comment — the comment will appear highlighted on the video page.
  2. To remove the highlight, open the video and switch the Sort by filter from Top to Newest to refresh the comments.
  3. If the highlight persists, scroll up to the video URL in your browser's address bar.
  4. Remove the &lc= parameter and everything after it from the URL, keeping only the base youtube.com/watch?v=VIDEOID address.
  5. Press Enter to reload the page — the comment will no longer be highlighted.

📌 Why this matters

Highlighted comments on YouTube appear automatically when you arrive at a video through a notification link, and many users do not know how to dismiss them. Knowing how to unhighlight a YouTube comment — either by switching the Sort by filter or removing the &lc= parameter from the URL — gives content creators and viewers full control over how comments are displayed. This is especially useful for channel admins and moderators who need a clean, unfiltered view of their comment section. These simple techniques work instantly and require no third-party tools or extensions.
