Use this interactive demo to learn how to mention and tag a teammate in a Jira work log entry.

Quick summary

You can tag a user in a Jira work log by editing an existing log entry and typing @ in the Work Description field to trigger the mention dropdown. This lets teams notify teammates directly within a ticket's activity history, keeping collaboration in context.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the ticket you want to edit.
  2. Scroll down to the Activity section and tap the Work Log tab.
  3. Find the work log entry you want to update, then click its Edit button.
  4. Click the Work Description input box and type @ to open the mention picker.
  5. Choose the user you want to tag from the dropdown list.
  6. Optionally, add a message alongside the tagged mention if needed.
  7. Click Save to apply the changes to the work log entry.
  8. The specified user will be tagged in the selected work log, confirming the update was successful.

📌 Why this matters

Tagging teammates directly in Jira work log entries eliminates the need for separate follow-up messages or status update emails. This feature keeps all project communication tied to the relevant ticket, improving team visibility and accountability. By using the @ mention inside a work log, project managers and developers can instantly notify collaborators of time-sensitive updates or clarifications. For teams managing complex sprints, this contextual communication capability makes Jira an even more powerful hub for agile collaboration.
