How to Start Voice Conversations in ChatGPT

Use this interactive demo to learn how to chat with ChatGPT using your voice in two different modes.

Quick summary

ChatGPT offers two built-in voice features: Voice Input lets you speak a message using the Microphone icon, while Voice Mode enables a fully hands-free, back-and-forth spoken conversation with ChatGPT.

Steps

  1. Locate the Microphone icon in the ChatGPT text box — this activates Voice Input, the first of two voice options.
  2. Speak your message aloud; your words are captured in real time as you talk.
  3. Hit the stop button when you finish speaking — your voice message is sent instantly.
  4. Click the sound wave icon to enter Voice Mode for a live, two-way spoken conversation with ChatGPT.
  5. Once Voice Mode is active, talk naturally — ChatGPT listens and responds out loud with no typing required.
  6. Click End when you are done to exit the voice conversation.

📌 Why this matters

ChatGPT's voice features — Voice Input and Voice Mode — transform the way users interact with AI by removing the need to type. Voice Input lets users dictate messages hands-free, while Voice Mode enables real-time, two-way spoken conversations that feel as natural as a phone call. These capabilities make ChatGPT significantly more accessible for on-the-go use, multitasking, and users who prefer speaking over typing. For anyone looking to get more out of ChatGPT, mastering voice interaction is one of the fastest ways to boost productivity and engagement.
