Use this interactive demo to learn how to divide a text box into separate boxes in Google Slides.

Quick summary

Google Slides has no built-in split text box feature, so splitting text requires manually cutting content and pasting it into a new text box. This step-by-step walkthrough shows you exactly how to divide a single text box into two separate, independently positioned text boxes.

Steps

  1. Open your presentation in Google Slides.
  2. Click the text box you want to split.
  3. Note that Google Slides has no built-in split text box option — you must move text into separate text boxes manually.
  4. Highlight the portion of text you want to separate, then right-click and select Cut, or press Ctrl + X (Windows) or Command + X (Mac).
  5. In the menu bar, click Insert, then select Text box.
  6. Draw a new text box on the slide.
  7. Right-click the new text box and select Paste, or press Ctrl + V (Windows) or Command + V (Mac) to paste the separated text.
  8. Move and resize both text boxes until the layout looks right.

📌 Why this matters

Google Slides is one of the most widely used presentation tools, yet it lacks a native option to split text boxes — a common formatting need for creating multi-column layouts, side-by-side content, or cleaner slide designs. Knowing how to manually split a text box in Google Slides gives users greater control over slide layout and visual hierarchy without requiring third-party tools. This technique helps presenters, educators, and business professionals produce more polished, structured slides faster. Mastering this workaround is essential for anyone who regularly designs presentations in Google Slides.
