Use this interactive demo to learn how to import and load a shapefile into QGIS in minutes.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to open a shapefile in QGIS by using the Add Vector Layer workflow. You can also drag and drop a .shp file directly into the layer panel as a quick alternative.

Steps

  1. Go to the top menu, click Layer, then choose Add Layer, and select Add Vector Layer.
  2. Set the source type to File, then click the Browse (...) icon to import your file.
  3. Choose your shapefile, then click Open.
  4. Click Add at the bottom of the window to load the layer.
  5. Alternatively, open the folder where the .shp file is stored and drag it into the layer panel to add it.

📌 Why this matters

Opening a shapefile in QGIS is one of the most common tasks in GIS workflows, enabling analysts, urban planners, and researchers to visualize and work with vector geographic data. QGIS is a free, open-source GIS platform that supports the widely used Shapefile format for mapping boundaries, roads, land use, and more. Mastering the Add Vector Layer workflow — or the even faster drag-and-drop method — lets users get spatial data into their projects in seconds, reducing setup friction and accelerating geospatial analysis.
