Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a budget tracker database in Notion.

Quick summary

A Notion budget tracker lets you organize expenses, set budgeted amounts, and compare them against actual spending — all inside a structured table database. This step-by-step guide shows you how to create a budget in Notion from scratch using built-in database properties.

Steps

  1. On your Notion page, type /table view and select Table view to insert a new database.
  2. Name the database Budget Tracker.
  3. Click the Name column header and rename it to Expense, then add budget items such as rent, grocery, and utilities.
  4. Click the + icon on the right side of the table to add a new column and select Number as the property type.
  5. Rename the new column Budgeted Amount.
  6. Click the + icon again, add another Number property, and rename it Actual Amount.
  7. Enter your planned budget under Budgeted Amount and your real spending under Actual Amount.
  8. Add more rows as needed to track the rest of your expenses.
  9. Click the two-headed arrow to Open as full page for an expanded view of your budget tracker.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's built-in database system makes it easy to create a personal or team budget tracker without needing a separate spreadsheet tool. By combining a table view with Number properties for budgeted and actual amounts, users can monitor spending patterns and stay on top of financial goals entirely within their Notion workspace. This approach centralizes expense tracking alongside notes, tasks, and projects, making Notion a powerful all-in-one productivity and budgeting platform. For anyone looking to manage finances without switching apps, building a Notion budget tracker is a fast, flexible, and free solution.
