How to Link Two Databases in Notion

Use this interactive demo to learn how to connect two separate Notion databases with a relation property.

Quick summary

Linking two Notion databases using a Relation property lets you create cross-database connections so tasks and projects stay in sync. This step-by-step walkthrough shows you exactly how to add a Relation, select a target database, and map individual records between them.

Steps

  1. Open the first Notion database you want to connect — for example, Database 1 containing projects like Website Redesign and Social Media Plan.
  2. Make sure you have a second database ready — for example, Database 2 with tasks like Homepage Wireframe, Update About Page, and Draft Instagram Posts.
  3. In Database 1, click the + icon to add a new property.
  4. Select Relation from the property type list.
  5. Choose Database 2 from the list of data sources.
  6. Rename the relation property if needed, then click Add relation to confirm.
  7. Click a cell under the new Relation property and select the related task from Database 2 — for example, connect Homepage Wireframe to Website Redesign.
  8. Repeat the same process to link the remaining projects and tasks between both databases.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's Relation property allows teams to create structured, bi-directional links between separate databases — turning isolated tables into a connected knowledge system. This is essential for project management workflows where tasks, projects, and resources need to reference each other without duplicating data. By linking databases, Notion users can filter, roll up, and surface related information across their workspace in real time. It's a foundational feature for anyone building scalable, relational data structures inside Notion.
