Use this interactive demo to learn how to load a GeoJSON file as a vector layer in QGIS.

Quick summary

Importing a GeoJSON file into QGIS lets you visualize geographic data as a vector layer on your map. You can add it via the Add Vector Layer dialog by selecting Protocol as the source type and GeoJSON as the protocol.

Steps

  1. On the top menu, click Layer, then select Add Layer, and choose Add Vector Layer.
  2. Choose Protocol as the Source Type.
  3. Choose GeoJSON as the Protocol Type.
  4. Click the Add button to import the file.
  5. The GeoJSON file is now added to the project. A new layer appears in the Layers Panel — enable it to view its features on the map.

📌 Why this matters

QGIS is the leading open-source GIS platform for spatial data analysis, and importing GeoJSON is one of the most common tasks for GIS professionals and developers. GeoJSON is a widely used format for encoding geographic data structures, making it essential for web mapping, data sharing, and spatial analysis workflows. Being able to quickly load a GeoJSON file as a vector layer in QGIS enables users to visualize, query, and analyze geographic features without any conversion overhead. This tutorial matters because it removes friction from a core GIS workflow, helping teams get spatial data onto the map faster.
