Use this interactive demo to learn how to bring DWG/DXF CAD drawings into QGIS as map layers.

Quick summary

Importing DWG files into QGIS lets you bring AutoCAD drawings directly into your GIS environment as editable vector layers. Use the built-in Import Layers from DWG/DXF tool to convert CAD geometry and blocks into spatial data ready for analysis and mapping.

Steps

  1. On the top menu, click 'Project', then select 'Import/Export' and choose 'Import Layers from DWG/DXF'.
  2. In the Source Drawing field, click the '...' (Browse) icon to locate and select your DWG or DXF file.
  3. Once the file is imported, other fields will populate automatically; if any remain empty, enter or choose the required information.
  4. Optionally, configure Block Import Options to control how CAD blocks are converted during the import.
  5. Modify the layers from the imported data as needed, then click 'OK' to confirm.
  6. The data layer will be added to the Layers Panel and will automatically open in the map layout.

📌 Why this matters

Importing DWG files into QGIS bridges the gap between CAD design workflows and GIS spatial analysis, enabling engineers, urban planners, and surveyors to reuse existing AutoCAD drawings without manual re-digitizing. QGIS natively supports DWG and DXF formats through its Import Layers tool, making it possible to convert CAD geometry, blocks, and layer structures into fully queryable GIS vector layers at no additional cost. This integration is critical for infrastructure projects, land development, and any workflow where precise CAD drawings need to be georeferenced, styled, or analysed alongside satellite imagery and other spatial datasets. By mastering this process, GIS professionals can dramatically reduce data re-entry time and maintain accuracy across both CAD and GIS environments.
