Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a WMS/WMTS basemap layer in QGIS.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to import a basemap in QGIS by connecting to a WMS/WMTS service and adding the layer to your project. You can load any web map service as a basemap in QGIS using the built-in Add Layer menu in just a few steps.

Steps

  1. Click 'Layer' on the top menu, then select 'Add Layer' and choose 'Add WMS/WMTS Layer'.
  2. On the new window, click 'New' to create a new connection.
  3. Enter the name and service URL of the map to be used.
  4. Click 'OK' to save the connection details.
  5. Click 'Connect' to establish the connection to the WMS/WMTS service.
  6. Select a layer from the list of available layers.
  7. Click 'Add' to add the selected layer to your QGIS project.
  8. Click 'Close' to dismiss the dialog.
  9. Go back to the QGIS dashboard and confirm the basemap layer has been added to the Layers Panel.

📌 Why this matters

Importing a basemap in QGIS using a WMS/WMTS connection gives GIS professionals and spatial analysts instant access to web-hosted reference maps without downloading large datasets. This capability is essential for contextualizing vector and raster data, enabling faster map production and more accurate spatial analysis. QGIS's built-in WMS/WMTS support means any publicly available web map service — including OpenStreetMap, satellite imagery, or government tile services — can be added as a live basemap in seconds. Mastering this workflow is a foundational skill for anyone building maps or performing geospatial work in QGIS.
