Use this interactive demo to learn how to export Google satellite imagery from QGIS as an image file.

Quick summary

This tutorial shows how to download Google Earth imagery in QGIS by connecting to Google Satellite via XYZ Tiles and exporting the map as an image file. It is a free workaround that lets GIS users capture high-resolution satellite imagery directly within QGIS without needing a Google Earth Pro export.

Steps

  1. Go to the left-side Browser panel and scroll down to XYZ Tiles.
  2. Click XYZ Tiles and select Google Satellite as a replacement for Google Earth imagery.
  3. Drag the connection onto the map layout to load the satellite layer.
  4. Go to Project in the top menu, select Import/Export, then choose Export Map to Image.
  5. Modify the export settings if needed, then click Save.
  6. Input the file title, then click Save to confirm the export.
  7. Open the file at the save location to verify the exported imagery.

📌 Why this matters

Downloading Google Earth imagery directly is not natively supported in QGIS, making this workaround highly valuable for GIS professionals and researchers who need high-resolution satellite basemaps for analysis or reporting. By connecting to Google Satellite through XYZ Tiles, users can load and export georeferenced imagery without leaving QGIS or purchasing third-party data. This method saves time, eliminates manual screenshot workflows, and ensures the exported image aligns with project coordinate systems. It is an essential technique for urban planners, environmental analysts, and any GIS user working with satellite-based spatial data.
