Quick summary
YouTube's HDR playback can cause washed-out or overexposed colors on non-HDR displays, making videos look worse rather than better. Disabling HDR by switching to a non-HDR quality setting in the YouTube player restores accurate, natural-looking colors instantly.
Steps
- Sign in and play an HDR video on YouTube.
- Click the Settings gear icon in the bottom right corner of the video player.
- Select Quality from the settings menu.
- In the quality options, confirm entries labeled with HDR (for example, HD or 4K).
- Select a non-HDR quality option at a similar resolution, such as 1080p instead of 1080p60, or at least 720p60.
- Turn off Ambient mode in the settings menu.
