How to Create Timeline Views in Notion

Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a Timeline view in your Notion database.

Quick summary

A Notion Timeline view lets you visualize database items on a date-based timeline, making it easy to track project schedules and deadlines at a glance. You can add a Timeline view to any existing Notion database that contains a Date property in just a few clicks.

Steps

  1. Open the Notion database where you want to create a timeline view, and ensure it has a Date property so items can be placed on the timeline.
  2. Click the + icon beside the name of your database to add a new view.
  3. Choose Timeline as the view type from the list of options.
  4. Name the view, such as Timeline or Project Timeline, to identify it easily.
  5. Click Done to confirm the view name and settings.
  6. Under show timeline by, select the date property you used on the table to control how items are plotted.
  7. Your Notion database now displays a Timeline view that organizes all items based on their assigned dates.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's Timeline view transforms flat database tables into a visual, date-driven project schedule — making it easier for teams to spot overlaps, track deadlines, and manage workloads in one place. Unlike a basic list or table view, the Timeline view gives project managers and team leads an instant Gantt-style overview without leaving their Notion workspace. For teams already using Notion for task management, enabling a Timeline view requires no extra tools or integrations — just a Date property and a few clicks. This makes it one of the fastest ways to add visual project tracking to an existing Notion workflow.
