Use this interactive demo to learn how to build and configure a database in Notion.

Quick summary

A Notion database lets you organize information with custom properties, multiple views, and structured entries — all inside your workspace. This guide walks you through creating a database, choosing a layout, and adding items step by step.

Steps

  1. Open the Notion page where you want to create a database and type /database.
  2. Select Database - Inline to embed it in the current page, or Database - Full page to create it as a standalone page.
  3. Name your new database.
  4. Using Database - Full page, click the settings icon beside the blue New button.
  5. Choose a database view: Table view, Board view, Gallery view, List view, or Calendar view.
  6. Add or rename properties such as Status, Date, Tags, or Files & media.
  7. Continue adding items and properties until your database is ready to use.
  8. Click New page to add a new database item.

📌 Why this matters

Notion databases are a core productivity feature that transform simple pages into structured, queryable workspaces for project management, content calendars, CRM tracking, and more. The ability to switch between Table, Board, Gallery, List, and Calendar views means teams can visualize the same data in the format that fits their workflow best. Custom properties like Status, Date, and Tags give users granular control over how information is captured and filtered. Mastering Notion databases is essential for anyone looking to replace spreadsheets or siloed tools with a unified, flexible workspace.
