Use this interactive demo to learn how to build a content calendar with status tracking in Notion.

Quick summary

A Notion content calendar uses a calendar view database to visually schedule and organize content by date. Adding a status property lets teams track each content piece from Not Started through to completion, all within a single Notion page.

Steps

  1. Type /calendar to open the block menu in your Notion page.
  2. Click Calendar view from the block options to insert the calendar database.
  3. Click Settings in the top-right corner of the calendar to open view settings.
  4. Select Edit properties from the dropdown menu.
  5. Select New property to add a custom field to the database.
  6. Select Status from the new property type dropdown.
  7. Under To-Do, click Not Started to configure the default status option.
  8. Select a color from the dropdown to visually represent that status.
  9. Click the Display as dropdown option to set how the status appears on calendar entries.
  10. Click Select to confirm the display setting.
  11. Exit Edit property to return to the calendar view.
  12. Click on a Date in the calendar to add a new content entry.
  13. Name your content item, such as Create an FB Reel.
  14. Repeat the same process to add more content entries to your calendar.
  15. Your content calendar is now ready in Notion, with a status property to track each piece.

📌 Why this matters

A Notion content calendar gives marketing and content teams a centralized, visual system to plan, schedule, and track every content piece by publish date. The built-in status property — configured directly inside the calendar database — eliminates the need for separate project management tools by showing at a glance whether each item is Not Started, In Progress, or Done. Because everything lives in Notion, teams can update statuses, rename entries, and expand the calendar without switching apps. This makes Notion one of the most flexible and cost-effective content planning solutions available for solo creators and teams alike.
