Use this interactive demo to learn how to add a task checklist inside a Jira ticket comment.

Quick summary

Adding a checklist to a Jira comment lets teams track sub-tasks and acceptance criteria directly on a ticket. Use the built-in Task List formatting option in Jira's comment editor to create and save a structured checklist in seconds.

Steps

  1. In your Jira space, find and select the ticket where you want to add a new comment.
  2. Under the Comments tab, tap the message box to open the comment editor.
  3. Click the List option in the comment editor menu.
  4. Choose Task List from the available formatting options.
  5. Type each checklist item one by one into the task list.
  6. Click Save to apply the changes and post the comment.
  7. Your checklist is now created and added to the Jira comment.

📌 Why this matters

Checklists inside Jira comments give development teams a lightweight way to track acceptance criteria, sub-tasks, and review steps without creating additional tickets. By embedding a Task List directly in a comment, team members can confirm progress in context, reducing back-and-forth communication and keeping all relevant task details in one place. This feature is especially valuable for agile teams managing sprint boards who need quick, visible sign-off steps tied to a specific issue. It streamlines collaboration and improves accountability without disrupting existing Jira workflows.
