Use this interactive demo to learn how to clip a raster using a mask layer in QGIS.

Quick summary

The Clip Raster by Mask Layer tool in QGIS lets you extract a portion of a raster dataset using a polygon boundary, so you can isolate spatial data to a specific geographic area. This step-by-step process uses the Raster Extraction menu to configure input and mask layers and export a clipped output file.

Steps

  1. Go to the top menu, click Raster, select Extraction, then choose Clip Raster by Mask Layer.
  2. Select your raster as the Input Layer.
  3. Select the polygon layer as the Mask Layer.
  4. Optionally, check Match the extent of the clipped raster to the extent of the mask layer.
  5. Choose an output file location in the Clipped (Mask) section.
  6. Click Run to execute the clipping process.
  7. The clipped raster result will automatically appear in the Layers Panel and map canvas.
  8. Uncheck the two input layers and leave the raster layer active to view the result.
  9. Your raster has been successfully clipped using a mask layer.

📌 Why this matters

Clipping raster data to a specific boundary is one of the most common spatial analysis tasks in GIS workflows. QGIS's Clip Raster by Mask Layer tool lets analysts and researchers reduce raster datasets to only the area of interest, saving storage space and improving processing performance. This is essential for projects involving land use analysis, environmental modeling, or regional mapping where global or national raster data must be narrowed to a study area. As a free, open-source GIS platform, QGIS makes this powerful raster geoprocessing capability accessible to everyone.
