Use this interactive demo to learn how to customize cover images on your Notion gallery cards.

Quick summary

Changing the gallery cover in Notion lets you display a custom image on each database card for a more visual, organized workspace. You can upload an image, paste a link, or choose a stock photo from Unsplash directly inside any Notion gallery view.

Steps

  1. On your Notion database, click the View settings icon near the top-right of the database.
  2. In the right panel, click Layout.
  3. Change the layout to Gallery.
  4. Open the gallery card you want to update.
  5. Click Add cover at the top of the page.
  6. Click Change cover and select Upload, Link, or Unsplash.
  7. For this demo, use the Gallery tab to pick a stock image as the cover.
  8. Once the cover is set, go back to Gallery view.
  9. In View settings, open Layout again and under Card Preview, set it to Page cover so the cover image appears on each gallery card.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's gallery cover feature transforms a plain database into a visually rich, image-driven workspace that makes it easier to scan and organize content at a glance. Setting a custom page cover on gallery cards helps teams build branded project boards, visual wikis, and content libraries directly inside Notion. This capability is especially valuable for teams that rely on visual workflows, since it removes the need for third-party tools just to make databases more intuitive and attractive. Mastering gallery cover customization unlocks a key layer of Notion's database personalization without any additional integrations.
