Use this interactive demo to learn how to convert a subtask into a story in Jira.

Quick summary

This demo shows how to convert a subtask to a story in Jira using the Move action and Work Type selector. Reassigning issue types in Jira helps teams maintain accurate sprint backlogs and proper issue hierarchy without recreating tickets.

Steps

  1. In your Jira project, find and select the subtask you want to convert.
  2. Tap the Actions button in the top-right corner of the issue.
  3. Choose Move from the list of available options.
  4. Click the Work Type menu to open the issue type selector.
  5. Select Story from the list of issue type options.
  6. Click Next to proceed to the next step of the move wizard.
  7. Fill out the required fields with the corresponding details, then click Next.
  8. Tap Confirm to agree to the terms and complete the conversion request.
  9. The selected subtask in your Jira space is now successfully changed to a Story.

📌 Why this matters

Converting a subtask to a story in Jira is a critical workflow for agile teams that need to re-scope work without losing issue history, comments, or linked data. Jira's Move feature lets project managers and developers reassign issue types in seconds, keeping the backlog clean and sprint planning accurate. This capability ensures that when requirements evolve — and a piece of work outgrows its subtask status — teams can promote it to a full story without duplicating effort. Mastering this Jira issue-type conversion reduces administrative overhead and keeps your project hierarchy aligned with actual delivery scope.
