How to add unique ID property in Notion database

Use this interactive demo to learn how to set up an auto-incrementing unique ID property in your Notion database.

Quick summary

The Notion unique ID property automatically assigns a sequential, prefixed identifier to every item in a Notion database, making it easy to track tasks, projects, or records without manual numbering. Once configured, the ID sequence continues automatically for every new database entry.

Steps

  1. Open the Notion page containing the database where you want to add a unique ID.
  2. Click the + Add property button beside your existing database columns.
  3. In the property type menu, select ID.
  4. Click the new ID property name and rename it to something like UniqueID, Task ID, or Project ID.
  5. Click Edit property to customize the unique ID, then type your preferred Prefix such as TASK or TSK.
  6. Enter your chosen prefix — for example TASK — then click Add ID prefix to apply it.
  7. Check the database to confirm that Notion automatically added unique IDs to each existing item.
  8. Add a new database item to verify that Notion continues the ID sequence automatically.

📌 Why this matters

The Notion unique ID property solves a common pain point for teams managing tasks, projects, or support tickets in Notion databases: the lack of a stable, auto-incrementing record identifier. By assigning a prefixed sequential ID — such as TASK-1, TASK-2 — to every database entry automatically, teams can reference, filter, and communicate about specific records without ambiguity. This feature is essential for project management workflows, bug tracking, and any use case where traceability and consistent record identification matter. Setting it up takes under a minute and requires no formulas or third-party integrations.
