Quick summary
Adding subtasks in Notion uses a self-referencing Relation property to link child tasks directly to a parent task within the same database. This method keeps all tasks organized in one place without needing a separate database or third-party tool.
Steps
- Open the Notion database where you want to add subtasks, ensuring it already contains task items such as Website Redesign, Homepage Wireframe, and Update About Page.
- Click the + icon beside your database properties to add a new property.
- Select Relation from the property type list.
- Choose the same database you are currently using to create a self-referencing relation.
- Name the relation property Subtasks, then click Add relation to create the subtask connection.
- Click the Subtasks cell for your main task to open the relation field.
- Select the tasks you want to add as subtasks, such as Homepage Wireframe and Update About Page.
- Repeat the same process for other main tasks that need subtasks assigned.
- Confirm that your main task now has subtasks connected inside the same Notion database.
