How to Add Subtasks in Notion

Use this interactive demo to learn how to create subtasks inside a Notion database using relations.

Quick summary

Adding subtasks in Notion uses a self-referencing Relation property to link child tasks directly to a parent task within the same database. This method keeps all tasks organized in one place without needing a separate database or third-party tool.

Steps

  1. Open the Notion database where you want to add subtasks, ensuring it already contains task items such as Website Redesign, Homepage Wireframe, and Update About Page.
  2. Click the + icon beside your database properties to add a new property.
  3. Select Relation from the property type list.
  4. Choose the same database you are currently using to create a self-referencing relation.
  5. Name the relation property Subtasks, then click Add relation to create the subtask connection.
  6. Click the Subtasks cell for your main task to open the relation field.
  7. Select the tasks you want to add as subtasks, such as Homepage Wireframe and Update About Page.
  8. Repeat the same process for other main tasks that need subtasks assigned.
  9. Confirm that your main task now has subtasks connected inside the same Notion database.

📌 Why this matters

Notion's subtask feature using self-referencing Relation properties lets teams break large projects into manageable child tasks without leaving their existing database. This native approach eliminates the need for third-party tools, keeping all task hierarchies visible and linked in one workspace. Teams that manage complex workflows — such as website redesigns or sprint planning — benefit from clear parent-child task structures that improve accountability and progress tracking. Understanding how to set up subtasks in Notion is essential for anyone looking to use Notion as a full project management solution.
