Use this interactive demo to learn how to load satellite imagery basemaps into QGIS using QuickMapServices.

Quick summary

QGIS lets you add satellite imagery basemaps directly to your map canvas using the QuickMapServices plugin with providers like Google or ESRI. Once selected, the imagery loads as a new layer in the Layers panel, giving you instant geographic context for your spatial analysis.

Steps

  1. In the top menu, click Web, then select QuickMapServices, and choose a provider such as Google or ESRI to access satellite imagery basemaps.
  2. Choose Google and select Google Satellite to load Google's satellite basemap into your project.
  3. Alternatively, choose ESRI and select ESRI Satellite to use ESRI's satellite imagery instead.
  4. Whichever satellite imagery is selected, it will open as a basemap in the layout and automatically add a new layer to the Layers panel.

📌 Why this matters

QGIS is a free, open-source GIS platform used by geospatial professionals, researchers, and analysts worldwide. Adding satellite imagery via the QuickMapServices plugin gives users instant access to high-quality basemaps from Google and ESRI without leaving the QGIS environment. This capability is essential for spatial analysis, field verification, and cartographic work where real-world visual context is critical. It removes the barrier of manual data import, making professional-grade satellite imagery accessible in just a few clicks.
