Use this interactive demo to learn how to insert a navigable table of contents in Notion.

Quick summary

The Notion Table of Contents block lets you automatically generate page navigation from your existing headings, making long pages easier to browse. Once inserted, the table of contents updates dynamically whenever you add or edit heading blocks on the page.

Steps

  1. Open the Notion page where you want to add a table of contents.
  2. Make sure your page has headings such as Heading 1, Heading 2, or Heading 3.
  3. Click the area where you want the table of contents to appear, type /table of contents to open the block menu, then select Table of contents from the list.
  4. Notion will automatically create a table of contents using the headings on your page.
  5. Your table of contents is now added and will update as you add or edit headings on the page.

📌 Why this matters

A Notion Table of Contents block transforms long, complex pages into structured, navigable documents without any manual linking. By automatically pulling in Heading 1, Heading 2, and Heading 3 blocks, it keeps navigation in sync as your content evolves. This feature is essential for wikis, project docs, and knowledge bases where readers need to jump quickly between sections. It reduces friction for teams relying on Notion as their central workspace, improving both readability and productivity.
