Use this interactive demo to learn how to add vector, raster, and basemap layers in QGIS.

Quick summary

Adding a layer in QGIS lets you load spatial data — such as raster or vector files — directly onto your map canvas for analysis and visualization. You can also add basemaps via the HCMGIS plugin and monitor all active layers in the Layers panel.

Steps

  1. Click Layer in the top menu, select Add Layer, then choose the type of layer you want to add — such as a vector layer, raster layer, or delimited text layer.
  2. Choose Add Raster Layer as your layer type, for example.
  3. Set the source type to File, then click the Browse (…) icon in the source field to locate and select your file.
  4. Click Add to load the selected layer onto your map canvas.
  5. Click HCMGIS in the top menu, select Basemaps, then choose your preferred basemap.
  6. View all your added layers in the Layers panel to confirm they loaded correctly.

📌 Why this matters

QGIS is the leading open-source GIS platform used by geographers, urban planners, and data analysts worldwide. Knowing how to add layers — including raster files, vector datasets, and web basemaps — is the foundational skill that unlocks every spatial analysis workflow in QGIS. This demo matters because beginners often struggle with the Layer menu structure and file source configuration, which are the two most common friction points when getting started. Mastering layer management in QGIS lets users move immediately from raw geospatial data to actionable map-based insights.
