Quick summary
Adding a layer in QGIS lets you load spatial data — such as raster or vector files — directly onto your map canvas for analysis and visualization. You can also add basemaps via the HCMGIS plugin and monitor all active layers in the Layers panel.
Steps
- Click Layer in the top menu, select Add Layer, then choose the type of layer you want to add — such as a vector layer, raster layer, or delimited text layer.
- Choose Add Raster Layer as your layer type, for example.
- Set the source type to File, then click the Browse (…) icon in the source field to locate and select your file.
- Click Add to load the selected layer onto your map canvas.
- Click HCMGIS in the top menu, select Basemaps, then choose your preferred basemap.
- View all your added layers in the Layers panel to confirm they loaded correctly.
