Use this interactive demo to learn how to create and configure a formula property in your Notion database.

Quick summary

A Notion formula property lets you run dynamic calculations across your database by referencing other property values. This guide shows you exactly how to add, configure, and apply a formula to any Notion database table.

Steps

  1. On the database table, click Add property at the right side of your existing columns.
  2. Select Formula from the property type dropdown menu.
  3. Click the formula property name at the top of the column.
  4. Select Edit property from the dropdown menu.
  5. In the formula panel, type or paste your formula.
  6. Click anywhere outside the formula panel to apply your changes.
  7. Your formula property is now added to your Notion database and will calculate results based on the formula you entered.

📌 Why this matters

Notion formula properties enable teams to build dynamic, auto-calculating databases without leaving their workspace. By referencing existing property values — such as Status, dates, or numbers — formulas eliminate manual data entry and reduce errors across project trackers, weekly planners, and task lists. This feature transforms a static Notion database into a powerful productivity tool that updates results in real time. Teams evaluating Notion for project management will find formula properties essential for tracking progress, scoring tasks, and automating data-driven workflows.
